Apple's senior vice president of industrial design, Sir Jonathan Ive, will design a limited version of the Leica M camera, company owner Andreas Kaufmann announced at a special event in Cologne, Germany this week.

The special version of the camera will be very limited indeed, as only one unit will ever be produced. While this makes it uninteresting to the vast majority of users, the camera’s existence has a purpose — it will be auctioned off with the proceeds being donated to charity.

No technical specifications or other details about the camera have been revealed. The “standard” version of Leica M sports a new 24-megapixel full-frame CMOS image sensor, Leica Maestro image processor, a 3-inch (7.62-cm) LCD screen, a metal chassis and the ability to record full HD video.

Apple’s Jonathan Ive is responsible for the design of many iconic products such as the iPad, iPhone, iMac and the MacBook Pro, and is considered to be one of the most influential industrial designers today.

JVC has chosen 1.3-inch hard drives for three new digital video cameras, since the aim is to be among the smallest in the palmcorder class while still having good optics. Designed to be about 20% lighter than the previous models, the GZ-MG740, 730 and 530 will nestle in your palm and give you 10x optical zoom and about an hour and a half of MPEG2 recording as well as 5-7 megapixel stills of whatever you fancy.

All three have new Konica-Minolta lenses with a 35mm equivalent zoom of 44-440mm, record video in the highest Fine mode at 720 x 480 pixels and have 2.7 inch 122,000 pixel LCD monitors. The ISO1000 mode will appeal to shooters who often find themselves in low light. Somewhat confusingly the blurb tells us that you can also record to microSD(HC) cards, but what the heck: this may be useful to augment the 30GB hard drive on the entry level version (40GB on the upper end). Around 2.7 x 4.7 x 2.7 inches and 0.84 pounds with battery, they will come with a dock and be available first in Japan for between ¥90,000 and ¥100,000, which is about $850 to $950 once they make their way over the Atlantic.

Canon has announced an update to the Canon PowerShot G12, called the PowerShot G15, at this year's Photokina camera trade show in Germany.

The new camera will feature the "brightest lens in a PowerShot G-series model" to date, says Canon, with a new f/1.8-2.8, 5x zoom lens. And that's joined by a 12.1-megapixel Canon 1/1.7-type high-sensitivity CMOS sensor powered by the company's new Digic 5 image processor.

As previously leaked, the new PowerShot G15 will sport the same styling and features as earlier G-series models and come with an aluminium body that is approximately 17 per cent smaller than the PowerShot G12.
